The Challenge
The owners of the Brunel Peaks Café & Bar wanted to develop a new hospitality venue in rural Western Southland, complete with a café, bar, and motorhome park.
Because the project was located outside a commercial zone and involved wastewater discharges, resource consents were required from both the district and regional authorities.
Our Solution
Our planning team supported the project from the outset, ensuring the proposal aligned with regulatory requirements while meeting the owners’ goals. We prepared and managed all necessary resource consent applications, including:
Southland District Council consents for commercial activity within a rural zone and associated signage
Environment Southland consents for the discharge of wastewater to land under the Proposed Southland Water and Land Plan and the Regional Effluent Land Application Plan
We collaborated with technical experts, including wastewater engineers, and provided input on site planning, signage design, and mitigation measures. Thanks to a proactive and coordinated approach, consents were successfully obtained from both councils in a timely manner.
The Outcome
The Brunel Peaks Café & Bar has now successfully opened and is serving both locals and visitors.
